To help people understand the gospel, place their faith in Jesus, and take the next step of obedience through baptism.
Faith + Baptism
Jesus’ final recorded words to His followers show the importance He placed on baptism: “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).
Baptism does not save a person. Rather, it is a public identification with Jesus Christ and a visible expression of the inward transformation that has already taken place through faith in Him. Throughout the New Testament, baptism follows a person’s decision to trust in Christ alone for salvation.
At Providence, we understand Scripture to teach that baptism is for those who have personally professed faith in Jesus. It is an act of obedience, a declaration of faith before the church, and a symbol of the believer’s union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection.

About
WHAT BAPTISM MEANS
Baptism is an outward symbol of an inward reality. As described in Romans 6, going under the water represents Christ’s death and the believer’s death to sin, while coming out of the water points to Christ’s resurrection and the believer’s new life in Him.
Baptism is:
-
An act of obedience to Jesus
-
A public profession of faith
-
A symbol of spiritual cleansing and new life in Christ
-
A celebration of God’s saving work in a believer’s life
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED
Baptism is for those who have placed their trust in Jesus Christ for salvation.
A believer is someone who recognizes that sin separates them from God and that no amount of good works or religious effort can bridge that gap. Instead, they trust fully in Jesus’ death and resurrection as the only basis for forgiveness and new life.
If you have come to this point in your spiritual journey, then you are ready to be baptized.
OUR BELIEF ABOUT BAPTISM
Providence Church believes Scripture teaches that only professing believers qualify for baptism.
Scriptural teaching on baptism may be summarized this way:
-
Baptism is an act of obedience to the command of Christ
-
Baptism symbolizes forgiveness, cleansing, and new life in Christ
-
Baptism identifies a believer with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection
-
Baptism gives believers the opportunity to publicly profess their faith before the church
